Jim;s Pacassa MTB Project
The Vosper fast patrol boats were first built for the Royal Navy in the early 50's then sol to the Royal Hellenic Navy, Royal Danish Navy, Royal Malaysian Navy, Brunei Navy and Libyan Navy and were all built and in service by 1968. They are all , hard chine planning boat and with one exception 96 ft length. All similar in appearance and general characteristics but differing in detail, to meet the particular requirements of the various navies. Powered by three Rolls Royce Marine Proteus gas turbine as there main power plant giving them a maximum speeds of between 50 and 60 knots these were the first warships in the world to be powered by this type of engine. Top meet the requirements of long patrols at low speed some versions were also fitted with two diesel engines for cruising and maneuvering.
There were four different classes of this boat and would depend on the individual countries naval requirements, some were fitted with only 40 mm cannons where as others with SS 12 guided missiles.
Four fast patrol boats of the Perkassa class were produced for the Royal Malaysian Navy and went in to service in 1967 because of the hot climate they operated in the boats were fitted with air conditioning to protect the wooden structure from the damp of the tropics and for crews comfort also funnel was fitted to the upper deck to avoid excessive heating of the engine room.
The model I built was from a SLEC Kit it took about 12 weeks to build. The kit came with build instructions, brush less motor, speed controller, prop and shaft, glass covering material all supplid by SLEC.
